Phonological Awareness Detectives Fun!

Many times I work with students either through RTI, or they are already on my caseload for other reasons, that have difficulties processing and discriminating sounds.  This impacts their ability to read and spell.  I have gone to several workshops over the years to help build my "tool bag" with activities to help address this area of weakness.  Every student may have different difficulties.  I find using the TAPS (Test of Auditory Processing) works best to help determine which area(s) are impacted.  With this test and tips I've gained through workshops, I created an activity called, Phonological Awareness Detectives!

In this file:

-Two open-ended board games to be used with the task cards provided.

-How many syllables?:  Students will pick a card and look at the picture.  They must express the amount of syllables in order to take a turn in the game.

-Same/Different:  Students must pick a card and hand it to the teacher/SLP or teacher/SLP can pick the cards for the student.  Teacher/SLP must read the two words provided and cover their mouths.  The student must express if the two words heard were the same or different.  To make things more difficult, play background music!

-Which word starts with the same sound?:  Students must pick a card and look at the image on the top.  There will be two images on the bottom.  They must select the correct image that starts with the same sound.

-Which word ends with the same sound?:  Students must pick a card and look at the image on the top.  There will be two images on the bottom.  They must select the correct image that ends with the same sound.

-Sound blending: Students must pick a card and hand it to the teacher/SLP or teacher/SLP can pick the cards for the student.   Students will hear sounds separately, with a brief pause in between each sound.  They must blend the sounds together to determine what word was being produced.

All image only cards contain a page with a word list used to help guide you!!  I hope you find this download helpful and cuts TONS of time out of planning!  Click HERE to access it!
